Dr. Karen's Background
Founder of HBA
Dr. Karen Helmick's path to acupuncture began far from a treatment room. She started her career as a Division I track and field coach and a professor of exercise physiology and wellness — work she loved, until years of debilitating migraines (some serious enough to be classified as TIAs) brought her to a standstill. After exhausting every western treatment with no relief, she tried acupuncture on a whim. More than fifteen years later, she remains migraine-free.
That experience changed everything. So impressed by the medicine that had given her life back, she immediately began studying to become a Doctor of Oriental Medicine. In her very first year of practice, Natural Awakenings Magazine named her a top-ranking acupuncturist — and she has since been voted "Best Acupuncturist of Venice" again and again by local patients in both the Herald Tribune and Venice Gondolier. She is also a sought-after speaker on acupuncture and natural medicine.
Today, Dr. Karen combines a deep understanding of the body's physiology with advanced training in pain, migraines, anxiety, thyroid conditions, Parkinson's, and more — building personalized treatment plans designed to help each patient heal naturally. When she's not in the office, you'll find her with her rescue dogs, riding horses, behind a camera, out for a run, or lost in a good novel.
