Getting Started

What happens during my first visit? Your first visit begins with a conversation. Dr. Karen will review your health history, listen to your concerns, and discuss your goals before creating a treatment plan — usually followed by your first acupuncture session. Plan for a little extra time so the visit never feels rushed.

Do I need to do anything to prepare? Just a few simple things: eat a light meal beforehand so you're not treated on an empty stomach, stay hydrated, and avoid caffeine or alcohol right before your appointment. Come as you are — we'll take care of the rest.

What should I wear? Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing is ideal, since it allows easy access to common treatment points on the arms and lower legs. We'll always make sure you're comfortable and properly draped throughout your session.

What is the free 20-minute consultation? It's a no-pressure, no-obligation chance to meet Dr. Karen, ask your questions, and talk through your health concerns before committing to treatment. It's the perfect first step if you're curious whether acupuncture is right for you.

How do I book my first appointment? Booking is easy — call or text us at 941-228-4688, or request an appointment right here on our website. We'd be glad to help you get started.

Is acupuncture right for me? Acupuncture helps people of all ages with a wide range of concerns, from pain and stress to sleep and overall wellness. If you're unsure whether it's a good fit for your situation, the free consultation is the best place to find out.

How early should I arrive? If you're a new patient, please arrive about 10–15 minutes early to complete any intake forms — or fill them out ahead of time using the forms on our website to save time at check-in.

Acupuncture

What is acupuncture? Acupuncture is a time-tested therapy, central to Traditional Chinese Medicine, that involves placing very fine, sterile needles at specific points on the body. It works to relieve pain, reduce stress, and restore your body's natural balance — gently and without medication.

Does acupuncture hurt? Most patients are surprised by how comfortable it is. The needles are extremely thin — much finer than the ones used for shots or blood draws — and many people feel little to nothing at all. Most find the experience deeply relaxing, and some even fall asleep during treatment.

Is acupuncture safe? Yes. When performed by a licensed, board-certified practitioner like Dr. Karen, acupuncture is very safe. We use only sterile, single-use needles that are disposed of after each treatment, so there is no risk of contamination.

How does acupuncture work? Acupuncture stimulates specific points on the body to improve circulation, calm the nervous system, reduce inflammation, and encourage the body's own healing response. Modern research continues to confirm its benefits for pain, stress, and many other conditions.

How will I feel after a treatment? Most people feel relaxed and calm after a session, and many notice relief from their symptoms right away. Others feel a gradual improvement over the following days. It's a good idea to drink plenty of water and take it easy after your visit.

How many needles are used? It varies by person and condition, but treatments are always tailored to you. Dr. Karen uses only as many needles as needed — often fewer than people expect — and your comfort guides every step.

Are there any side effects? Acupuncture is very well tolerated. Some people may notice minor, temporary effects like slight bruising or tenderness at a needle site, but serious side effects are rare. Dr. Karen will discuss anything you should know before you begin.

What are acupuncture point injections? Point injection therapy combines traditional acupuncture points with small injections of vitamins, homeopathics, or other natural solutions. This enhances and extends the benefits of treatment, offering longer-lasting relief from pain and inflammation. Dr. Karen performs these herself as part of your care.

Do you use essential oils in treatment? Yes. Dr. Karen incorporates therapeutic-grade essential oils into treatments to deepen relaxation, ease tension, and support healing. They're a gentle, aromatic complement to acupuncture.

What is ear acupuncture (auriculotherapy)? Ear acupuncture, or auriculotherapy, targets points on the ear that correspond to the rest of the body. It's especially effective for stress, sleep, and emotional balance — and it's the foundation of our NADA nights.

What are NADA nights? NADA nights are relaxing group ear-acupuncture sessions focused on calming the nervous system, easing stress, and improving sleep and overall balance. They're offered every Monday and Wednesday evening at 6:00 pm.

What other techniques does Dr. Karen use? Beyond classical acupuncture, Dr. Karen draws on a range of methods — including Japanese acupuncture, Dr. Tan techniques, Neuro-Emotional Technique (NET), meridian testing, and homeopathy — selecting the right approach for your unique needs.

Complimentary Services

What is neuromuscular therapy? Neuromuscular therapy (NMT) is a focused form of massage that targets the specific trigger points and tight muscles behind chronic and acute pain. It works to release tension, improve circulation, and restore healthy, pain-free movement.

How is it different from a regular massage? While a relaxation massage focuses on overall comfort, neuromuscular therapy is more therapeutic and precise. It addresses the root source of pain and dysfunction, making it especially helpful for injuries, chronic tension, and ongoing pain.

Can I combine massage with acupuncture? Absolutely — in fact, they work beautifully together. Pairing massage and neuromuscular therapy with acupuncture often speeds recovery, deepens relief, and helps your results last longer.

Is the massage painful? Therapeutic bodywork can involve some firm pressure on tight or tender areas, but it should never be unbearable. Your therapist will always work within your comfort level and adjust as needed.

What is cupping? Cupping is a gentle therapy that uses suction cups placed on the skin to increase circulation, relieve muscle tension, and promote healing. It's often used alongside acupuncture and massage to ease pain and stiffness.

Does cupping hurt? No — most people find cupping relaxing. You'll feel a gentle pulling sensation as the cups draw up the skin, but it shouldn't be painful.

Will cupping leave marks? Cupping can leave temporary circular marks on the skin, which may look like light bruises. These are painless and typically fade within a few days. They're simply a sign of increased circulation to the area.

What is cupping good for? Cupping is commonly used for muscle tightness, back and neck pain, tension, and stress. Many patients find it especially helpful for loosening stubborn, tight areas.

Appointments & Scheduling

How do I book an appointment? Booking is easy — call or text us at 941-228-4688, or request an appointment right here on our website. We'll confirm your visit and answer any questions you have.

Is my appointment confirmed when I request it online? Requesting an appointment online starts the process, but it isn't final until our office confirms it with you. We'll reach out to lock in the day and time that works best for your schedule.

How long do appointments last? Your first visit typically takes a bit longer, since it includes a full health review and consultation along with your treatment. Follow-up sessions are usually shorter. We'll always give you a time estimate when you book.

How many sessions will I need? It depends on your condition and how long you've had it. Some patients feel relief after just one or two visits, while chronic concerns often respond best to a series of treatments. Dr. Karen will recommend a personalized plan during your visit.

What if I need to reschedule or cancel? We understand that life happens. If you need to reschedule or cancel, please give us as much notice as possible — at least 24 hours — so we can offer your time to another patient. Just call or text the office.

Do you offer evening or weekend appointments? Appointments are available throughout the week, and our NADA nights are held Monday and Wednesday evenings at 6:00 pm. Call the office to find a time that fits your schedule.

Can I book a standalone consultation first? Yes! If you'd like to meet Dr. Karen and ask questions before committing to treatment, you can book a free 20-minute consultation. It's a no-pressure way to get started.

Insurance and Payout

Do you accept insurance? Yes, we do accept insurance. Coverage for acupuncture varies from plan to plan, so the best way to know what your policy covers is to give our office a call at 941-228-4688. We're happy to check your benefits for you before your visit.

How do I find out if I'm covered? Just call our office and we'll help verify your coverage. Acupuncture benefits differ widely between insurance plans, so we recommend checking before your first appointment so there are no surprises.

What if my insurance doesn't cover acupuncture? No problem — many of our patients pay directly for their care. We'll always be transparent about pricing so you can make the choice that's right for you and your budget.

What forms of payment do you accept? We accept a variety of convenient payment options. Please contact the office if you have questions about a specific payment method before your visit.

How much does a session cost? Pricing depends on the type and length of your treatment. We're glad to go over our rates with you when you call to schedule, so you'll know exactly what to expect.

Do you offer treatment packages? If you're planning a series of treatments, ask us about options that may help you get the most value from your care. Dr. Karen will recommend a treatment plan suited to your needs and goals.

Conditions and Treatments

What can acupuncture treat? Acupuncture is well known for relieving pain, but it can help with much more — including migraines and headaches, stress and anxiety, poor sleep, arthritis, digestive issues, and overall wellness. If you're wondering whether it can help your specific concern, just ask during your free consultation.

Can acupuncture help with chronic pain? Yes — pain relief is one of the most common reasons people come to see Dr. Karen. Acupuncture can help ease back, neck, and joint pain, nerve pain, arthritis, and other chronic conditions, often reducing the need for medication.

Can it help with migraines and headaches? This is a personal area of expertise for Dr. Karen, who overcame her own debilitating migraines through acupuncture. She works with patients to reduce the frequency and intensity of headaches and migraines, naturally.

Does acupuncture help with stress, anxiety, and sleep? Yes. Acupuncture is wonderful for calming the nervous system, which can ease anxiety, lift mood, and improve sleep. Our NADA nights are especially popular for stress relief and relaxation.

Can acupuncture support conditions like thyroid issues, Parkinson's, or MS? Dr. Karen has advanced training in supporting patients with thyroid conditions, Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis, and other complex concerns. Acupuncture works alongside your conventional care to help manage symptoms and improve comfort and quality of life.

I have a condition that isn't listed here — can acupuncture still help? Quite possibly. Acupuncture supports the whole body, so it can benefit many concerns beyond those listed. The best way to find out is to schedule a free consultation and talk with Dr. Karen directly.

Will acupuncture work alongside my current medical care? Yes. Acupuncture is a complement to conventional medicine, not a replacement for it. Dr. Karen is happy to work as part of your overall care team, and we always encourage you to keep your other providers informed.

Herbal Prescriptions

What are herbal prescriptions? Herbal prescriptions are high-quality supplements that Dr. Karen recommends to support your healing between visits and extend the benefits of your treatments. She selects from a carefully chosen lineup of trusted, professional-grade brands, so you can feel confident in what you're taking.

How do I know which supplements are right for me? Dr. Karen will recommend specific products based on your individual health, concerns, and goals. If you're new to herbal supplements, simply schedule a consultation and she'll help you find the right options for you.

Are the supplements safe? The brands Dr. Karen recommends are professional-grade and carefully selected for quality and purity. As with any supplement, it's important to take them as directed and to let Dr. Karen know about any medications or other supplements you're taking, so she can ensure everything works safely together.

How do I reorder my supplements? Reordering is quick and easy, so you never have to pause your progress. Just reach out to our office and we'll help you restock the products Dr. Karen has recommended.

Can I get herbal recommendations without being a regular acupuncture patient? Yes. If you're interested in herbal supplements to support your health, you can schedule a consultation with Dr. Karen to discuss the best options for you, even if you're not currently receiving acupuncture.

Do I need to keep taking them long term? Not necessarily. Some supplements are recommended for a short period to support a specific goal, while others may be helpful over a longer term. Dr. Karen will guide you on what's right for your situation.
