Acupuncture at no cost to you.
Veteran Services

Healthy Body Acupuncture is a VA Community Care provider, which means eligible veterans can receive acupuncture treatment here at no cost, paid through your VA benefits, without driving to a VA facility.
Dr. Karen Helmick treats veterans dealing with the things service leaves behind: chronic pain, old injuries, poor sleep, and a nervous system that won't stand down. Acupuncture is one of the few drug-free treatments the VA covers for pain, and for many veterans it's the first thing that has helped without a prescription attached. Care here is unhurried and private, and Dr. Karen takes the time to hear your whole story before treating anything.
1
Getting Your VA Referral
Ask your VA primary care provider for a Community Care referral for acupuncture. Once it's approved, the VA authorizes your visits and we handle the paperwork from there. Not sure how to start? Call us at 941-228-4688 and we'll walk you through it.
2
Pain and Injury Treatment
Acupuncture for chronic back and neck pain, joint pain, old service injuries, and headaches. Treatment plans follow your VA authorization, and Dr. Karen coordinates with the rest of your care.
3
Sleep & Stress Support
Gentle treatment focused on calming the nervous system — better sleep, less edge, more steadiness. Many veterans find this becomes the reason they keep coming, even when pain was what brought them in.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this really cost me nothing? If you're referred through VA Community Care, yes — the VA pays for authorized visits directly. No copay comes through us. Your eligibility and the number of visits covered are determined by the VA, and we'll help you understand your authorization before treatment starts.
How do I get a referral? Ask your VA primary care provider for a Community Care referral for acupuncture. If they approve it, the VA sends us the authorization and we schedule you. If you're not sure what to say or you're hitting a wall, call us at 941-228-4688 — we've helped other veterans through the process and we're happy to walk you through it.
Why would the VA send me outside the VA for care? Community Care exists so veterans aren't stuck waiting or driving long distances for services the VA can't provide nearby. Acupuncture is one of the services the VA routinely refers out. It's your benefit — using it is the point.
I've never tried acupuncture. Does it hurt? Most veterans are surprised by how little they feel. The needles are hair-thin, nothing like an injection. The most common reaction at a first visit isn't pain — it's falling asleep on the table.
What do veterans usually come in for? Chronic back and neck pain, knees and shoulders that took a beating in service, headaches, poor sleep, and stress that won't shut off. Pain is usually what gets someone in the door. Sleeping through the night is usually why they keep coming.
Do I have to talk about my service? No. Dr. Karen will ask about your injuries and health history because treatment requires it, but what you share beyond that is up to you. Some veterans talk, some don't. Both are fine here.
How many visits will I get? That's set by your VA authorization, and it varies. Many authorizations cover an initial series of visits, and your VA provider can renew it if the treatment is helping. Dr. Karen tracks your progress and documents it for the VA, which supports renewals.
